The performance of Ferrari in F1 is unacceptable for the head of FIAT

Sergio Marchionne, the head of FIAT - which owns the Ferrari brand -, expressed more than dissatisfaction with the current situation of the Scuderia, especially in terms of results despite having a competent duo of drivers and team members.

Ferrari is not at its best this year, with the Italian team currently in 4th place in the constructors’ championship behind Mercedes, Red Bull, and Williams. This did not improve during the last race, held at home in Monza, with Fernando Alonso’s retirement and a 9th place finish for Kimi Räikkönen.

Sergio Marchionne, head of FIAT, is not satisfied with the current situation of the Maranello team and has made this known in the Italian press. However, he has not necessarily demanded Luca di Montezemolo’s resignation as has been suggested in recent days.

Asked whether change was necessary, he responded in the negative, in comments relayed by Autosport: “No, I’m simply saying it’s something that must be resolved. It’s one thing to sell cars and get results, another, which is essential for what we do—not the market—is to represent a winning Ferrari in Formula 1. It’s a non-negotiable point and remains a clear objective. We cannot accept a different situation. I don’t want to see drivers in 7th or 12th position: I’m not interested in that, neither is FIAt.”

Marchionne, however, believes that all the conditions are in place for Ferrari to return to the forefront, and he does not understand why the results are not materializing: « I have been a tifoso for years, and to see Ferrari in these conditions with the best drivers in the world, excellent people in the garage, and competent engineers: to see all this and see that we haven’t won anything since 2008… no. […] Over the last six years, we have suffered tremendously even with the best drivers. Look, Alonso and Räikkönen are both world champions. »
