While the major storyline of the silly season seemed to involve Fernando Alonso, it was ultimately Sebastian Vettel who made the first move by announcing his departure from the Red Bull team with which he won his four titles from 2010 to 2013. The German appears set to join Scuderia Ferrari, although no announcement to that effect has yet been made.

Autosport announces that the German might have activated a clause in his contract – which was valid until the end of 2016 – allowing him to leave the Red Bull. It could be a clause stipulating that the German can be released from his obligations if he is not among the top 3 in the Championship by September 30th.

« Sebastian Vettel has informed us that he will leave Red Bull at the end of the season. We want to warmly thank Sebastian for the incredible role he has played at Red Bull over the last six seasons. »

Red Bull took advantage of this announcement to offer the seat in the main team, in 2015, to the Russian Daniil Kvyat, who is about to complete his first year in the premier discipline.
