With the problems faced by Caterham and Marussia for several weeks now, Fernando Alonso is worried about the fate of these small teams. The former Renault team driver began his career with Minardi, a team that has since disappeared, but which became Toro Rosso over the course of acquisitions.

He estimates, with Autosport, that the survival of these small teams is very important and he hopes that solutions will be found: « I am sure they will do their best for the sport and we will support them. »

« I started in a small team, Minardi, all drivers must have the same opportunity to start with small teams. We need everyone in the sport, more teams and more help for F1. »

« I hope we will find a solution. I don’t know exactly what the problems and possible solutions are, but I think everyone must try to find a solution. I’m sure they will do what is best for the sport and we will support them, » he continues.

Currently 5th in the drivers’ championship, Fernando Alonso is expected to contest his last F1 Grand Prix for Scuderia Ferrari in Abu Dhabi, where he will fight for 4th place in the World Drivers’ Championship, trailing Sebastian Vettel by only two points. He will also need to watch out for Valtteri Bottas, over whom he has only a one-point lead.

Asked about the possibility of having more cars per team in 2015 – if other teams disappear, the double Spanish world champion was perplexed: « It’s something we’ve never tried. If it happens, it’s because they think it’s the best solution. I don’t think adding a third car would be the best solution, because it would be something new, I don’t know if it’s the best solution. »
