The Porsche brand is not interested in F1

Having returned to Endurance in early 2014, Porsche has no desire to return to Formula 1, even though it is often mentioned as being close to a comeback in the discipline due to the Volkswagen group's interest in entering Formula 1 in the coming years.

The Volkswagen group is often cited as a serious candidate for entering Formula 1 through one of its prestigious brands, such as Audi, Porsche, or Lamborghini, for example. The first two mentioned are currently engaged in the World Endurance Championship.

Porsche, however, has ruled out any entry into Formula 1 through its chief designer, Wolfgang Hatz, who told Auto Motor und Sport: « Formula 1 has never been of interest to us and never will be. Le Mans, on the other hand, is an environment that is becoming increasingly attractive. More and more rivals are coming, and we learn more for our road car production. »

Porsche already raced in Formula 1 in the late 50s and early 60s before returning as an engine supplier in the 1980s with McLaren via a TAG-branded engine. But after a 1991 season as Footwork’s engine supplier, participating in only the first six races, the Porsche brand has not appeared in Formula 1 and, according to Hatz, it is not expected to return.

Endurance seems to be the priority for the Stuttgart brand. It returned to LMP1 in 2014 and finished 3rd in the constructors’ championship, managing to secure its first victory since returning in Brazil during the last round.
