The FIA indicated that it would conduct an investigation to determine the circumstances and consequences of Fernando Alonso’s accident on Sunday, February 22, during the final day of the first Barcelona tests.

The discipline’s authorities do not systematically conduct an investigation regarding crashes that occur during tests because they are not officially formal events. These are organized by the teams. However, the fact that the Spaniard was hospitalized for three days – until his release this afternoon – appears to have been a determining factor in the process initiated by the Federation.

Autosport reveals that the FIA and McLaren have already begun working together by sharing data from the accident. Footage from the circuit’s security cameras has also emerged and will be used to better understand the incident. In these low-quality images, according to the British publication, the MP4-30 No. 14 exits too wide in turn 3, Alonso attempts to correct the trajectory and goes straight into the wall, albeit having slowed down beforehand.

A spokesperson for the FIA explained that this investigation would be important to try to determine if improvements are necessary in terms of safety: « We will be looking very closely at what happened. We want to know what occurred, so we will gather all the information we can and also fully cooperate with McLaren. » Some observers have particularly highlighted the need for protection of inner walls similar to that of outer walls to prevent too violent impacts against concrete walls.
