Lewis Hamilton close to being renewed
The 2014 world champion is reportedly very close to signing a new multi-year contract; he explains how the negotiations with Mercedes are going.
Lewis Hamilton revealed on Sky Sports that he is close to signing a new contract with the Silver Arrows.
« I hope we are in the final phase. I’m not really sure what the timeline is. We’re not in a rush, but we are definitely in the last stages of the renewal »
The 2014 world champion explained that if his contract was not renewed, it would not affect his title defense:
« I don’t think it makes a difference, not in my preparation. It might be the case for the team, but I don’t think so. We are committed for this year anyway, contractually, so it’s one less thing to worry about ».
Furthermore, Toto Wolff denied that Hamilton requested a million pounds per week, insisting that the negotiations are proceeding calmly.
Toto and Niki Lauda are people with whom you can easily talk. The atmosphere is normal. In the work, we have mutual respect and a willingness on both sides to want to continue working together, which makes negotiations easier.
According to information from Skysports, Hamilton’s contract would be for several years. The British driver does not know if Mercedes will be his last team.
