Lewis Hamilton indicated that he thought of Fernando Alonso while he was on the podium at the Malaysian Grand Prix, alongside Sebastian Vettel, the Spaniard’s successor at Ferrari.

After five years with Ferrari, where he competed for the title in 2010 and 2012 and secured 11 victories, Alonso decided to seek a change of scenery and take on the challenge of Honda’s return with McLaren.

The beginnings of the MP4-30 and the Honda hybrid unit are difficult, however. Withdrawn in Australia, the Asturian qualified in 18th and second-to-last position in Sepang and was unable to finish the race due to an ERS problem. The contrast is striking with, at the same time, Vettel’s first victory driving the Ferrari SF15-T.

Hamilton couldn’t help but question the mindset of his former teammate: “I was sitting next to Sebastian and I thought: What could Fernando be thinking right now? I remember when I left McLaren to join Mercedes, we were better the following year. […] But he almost did the opposite of what I did. It could have been him [winning]. It’s just strange to see how things evolve,” he stated, as reported by Crash.net.

During the weekend, Fernando Alonso repeatedly stated that he does not regret his decision to leave Ferrari for McLaren.
