Red Bull: Ricciardo breaks his engine on the last corner but secures points
The Renault engine of Daniel Ricciardo wisely waited until the last corner to go up in smoke. The Red Bull driver still managed to finish the race in 6th place, while his teammate Daniil Kyvat also finished in the points.
It’s a spectacular, even comical image – if it weren’t tragic for the Australian who would have gladly done without: Daniel Ricciardo finished the Bahrain Grand Prix with a Renault engine going up in smoke at the last corner. The Red Bull driver stopped just after the finish line, ending the race in 6th place. « The weekend went pretty smoothly for me until the end of the race. I don’t know what happened, but the team will need to look into it ».
Despite these new mechanical setbacks, Daniel Ricciardo noted the progress of the Red Bull, which easily kept Romain Grosjean’s Lotus at a distance this time: « The chassis is working better and better, and in the corners, we are more or less on target. We will head to Europe and then see if we can move up in the hierarchy ».
Daniil Kvyat also benefited from the improvements in the Red Bull chassis. Starting from the back of the grid, the Russian driver managed to snatch 9th place from Felipe Massa. « I had a lot of fun during the race today, I’m happy to say. We recovered well to finish in the points. We also gathered a good amount of data that will need to be analyzed to see what developments can be made to progress. (…). I can see the positive vibes coming ».
