Qualified in 8th position, Carlos Sainz Jr will ultimately have to start from the pit lane for the Monaco Grand Prix tomorrow. The Spanish driver was under investigation by the stewards for not stopping at the weighbridge in Q1.

« The driver did not stop for weighing in Q1 when indicated by a red light, the car was not returned to the FIA garage and modifications were made [to the car], » states the stewards’ report.

Consequently, due to article 26.1 (iv) of the sporting regulations, the Toro Rosso driver has been excluded from the session: « A reprimand will be issued to any driver who does not stop when instructed to do so, provided that the car is then returned to the FIA garage without delay and the FIA technical delegate is satisfied that the car has been returned in the same condition as it was when it entered the pit. Any driver who does not stop when asked, and then fails to return the car to the FIA garage, or if work is carried out on the car before its return to the FIA garage, must start the race from the pit lane. »

This penalty benefits his teammate, Max Verstappen, who will start from 9th position, as well as Maldonado (8th on the grid) and Button (10th on the grid).
