Renault F1: Reliability Rediscovered, Focus on Performance

With a 9th place as the best result, there was nothing to boast about for Renault after the Canadian Grand Prix. However, the French engine manufacturer no longer seems to experience reliability issues and can now turn its focus towards pure performance.

Circuit showcasing engine power, the Gilles Villeneuve track did not – as expected – benefit the Red Bull and Toro Rosso teams. Powerless on the straights, the four Renault drivers could not compete with the best. The best result for the diamond brand was Daniil Kvyat’s ninth place.

Nevertheless, Renault encountered no reliability issues. Rémi Taffin, Director of Operations, was pleased after the race: « The Montreal circuit is one of the most demanding of the season for power units. It is on the same level as Silverstone and Monza in terms of the stress applied. Despite these demands, we encountered no issues this weekend. We also strategically used a fifth engine for Max [Verstappen], which includes our latest developments in terms of reliability. This engine worked as expected and confirms a better correlation between the track and the test bench. »

Now that the reliability issues seem to be resolved, Renault will be able to focus on pure performance: We still need to go to a few engine tracks, where power will play an important role. But since we have the reliability under control again, we can focus on performance, without sacrificing other parameters, of course.

The General Manager, Cyril Abiteboul, concurred: « This result is nothing extraordinary, but we can still take some positives from this weekend. We have not encountered any reliability issues for the third consecutive race. With this objective achieved, we can now focus on performance, working with the teams to get the most out of the engine and chassis. »

The Austrian Grand Prix, also a circuit that favors engine power with its long straights, is unlikely to be favorable to Renault. Cyril Abiteboul is already preparing for it: « As we have already stated, we are working on the long term; therefore, we must focus on the future and not get discouraged when results are not forthcoming, as is the case this weekend. »
