Mercedes: a small mistake by Hamilton gives pole position to Rosberg
Undefeated without question in Singapore, the Mercedes reminded the paddock that they remain the fastest cars on the track. However, in an unusual occurrence this season, Nico Rosberg managed to outpace Lewis Hamilton and will start on pole tomorrow.

So it is indeed the extreme layout of Singapore that caused so much trouble for the Silver Arrows last weekend; because on a circuit where both the engine and the chassis are truly decisive, in the temple of Suzuka, the Mercedes left no room for doubt, leaving the competition over half a second behind.
The anticipated duel between Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton in Q3 was, however, cut short by the red flag caused by Daniil Kvyat’s accident. On his first attempt, Lewis Hamilton locked his wheels at the hairpin, while the German managed a clean lap. Thus, by a mere 74 thousandths of a second, Nico Rosberg secured his second pole position of the season.
The German will undoubtedly aim for victory tomorrow: « It was difficult to set up the car here for dry conditions, because we had experienced two sessions in the rain. But when we were able to do race and qualifying runs, I had a good feeling today. (…) I am confident for tomorrow. Thanks to the team for this car. It seems that we are back and stronger here than in Singapore. »
Lewis Hamilton saw the pole slip away from him, but his Mercedes suits him exceptionally well and he is not giving up for the race: « The car is behaving perfectly this weekend. (…) It’s a track where you’re constantly fighting to gain a bit more time; the last lap started very well and I was at turn seven when the red flag finally came out. (…) Tomorrow will be difficult; it will depend on the conditions. The start will be crucial, since you can’t follow someone closely here, and it’s also difficult to overtake. But I will do my best. »
