On the dry track at Suzuka, Pirelli only anticipates two stops
A two-stop strategy on a dry track is undoubtedly faster than a three-stop strategy, Pirelli stated this Saturday. However, the likely arrival of rain could significantly change the course of the race...

The two Friday sessions, held under pouring rain, did not provide much insight to the twenty drivers on the grid who had to make up for lost time this Saturday. « With the rain that fell yesterday, the drivers had a lot on their plate during the third Free Practice session this morning. Suzuka always offers several strategic opportunities, so the teams will need to carefully analyze their data tonight to see how they can maximize the tires and pit stops to gain a competitive advantage » reminds Paul Hembery, the head of competition at Pirelli.
For tomorrow’s race, the Italian manufacturer is planning an optimal two-stop strategy: Compared to a weekend run entirely on dry, teams lack data to calculate their strategies: this could affect their full understanding of the strategies. Two stops are expected for this 53-lap Japanese Grand Prix. The fastest strategy for us will be: start on medium, stop between laps 16 and 18 for mediums, and stop between laps 33 and 35 for hards. A three-stop strategy is still possible, but it wouldn’t be as fast.
The rain could, however, disrupt this otherwise rational picture, as Paul Hembery suggests: « There is always a risk of rain; in such a case, strategists will have to be very reactive. » According to the latest forecasts, tomorrow’s race should take place on a dry track, but could be interrupted by some showers.
