Sainz wanted more, Kyvat feels cursed
Carlos Sainz did not put in a disgraceful performance in Monaco. The Spaniard, who qualified 6th, finished 8th but was hoping for a little more from his race. Daniil Kvyat experienced every kind of setback in the race, from an initial electrical problem to a final retirement. He will be penalized in Canada after colliding with Kevin Magnussen.

Once again, the Toro Rossos slipped back on Sunday compared to Saturday. Carlos Sainz could rely on a very efficient chassis but missed the opportunity to score big points like Sergio Perez (3rd) or even Nico Hülkenberg (6th). He was therefore not entirely satisfied at the finish: « To be honest, I am not happy with my 8th position at the finish, because I felt it was possible today to grab some big points. »
As usual, the strategy – crucial today – hindered the Faenza team: « On my side, I kept the car away from the walls and was fast on three compounds, so I’m satisfied with that. But it’s disappointing to have lost places during our stops. (…) Anyway, eighth place means four points, which isn’t bad – I would have been happy if you had told me that before arriving in Monaco, but after starting from sixth place and seeing how chaotic the race was, that’s no longer the case. »
The Spaniard had the pleasure of running for the first time in the princely streets (he couldn’t take the start last season). His other satisfaction is having outclassed his new teammate, Daniil Kvyat.
The Russian driver, after a difficult qualifying, experienced an equally bitter race. After an electrical problem at the beginning of the race, he immediately fell a lap behind the pack. During the race, he got into a collision with Kevin Magnussen, even though the Toro Rosso was a lap down. Found responsible for the incident, Kvyat received a three-place grid penalty for Canada and two penalty points on his license. “What a frustrating race!” he grumbled at the finish. “I don’t believe in luck, but today we were really unlucky… We had an electrical problem at the start of the race. I was stuck at 60 km/h during the first two laps.”
After the problem was resolved, Daniil Kvyat tried to catch up with the pack but ended up colliding with Magnussen. However, he does not consider himself guilty of the incident with the Renault: « Neither of us wanted to let the other pass… It’s racing and unfortunately, such things happen. »
In the constructors’ standings, Toro Rosso increases its lead over Haas but sees McLaren closing in. Force India reclaimed 5th place after Sergio Perez’s podium and Nico Hülkenberg’s 6th place.
