The Canadian Grand Prix will be on the calendar in 2017
The Canadian Grand Prix was on probation for 2017, but the mayor of Montreal confirms that an agreement has been reached with FOM for the race to continue at least for next season.
The provisional calendar for the 2017 Formula 1 season cast doubt on the staging of the Canadian Grand Prix. Today, the doubts have been dispelled after confirmation of its 2017 event by the mayor of the city of Montreal and the Grand Prix organizers.
After months of negotiations between FOM and the promoter of the American Grand Prix Octane Racing Group, a compromise was reached today as confirmed by Montreal’s mayor, Denis Coderre, on Twitter, with ticket sales already open for the fiftieth Canadian Grand Prix in F1.
The mayor declared today: « Formula 1, for me, is extremely important and it is one of the major essential events in the city of Montreal »
Let’s recall that in 2014, a ten-year agreement had been signed but required a complete resurfacing and renovation of the paddocks for the 2017 edition. When it became impossible to complete the work on time, a standoff erupted between Bernie Ecclestone, the city hall, and the promoters. The works were reportedly postponed to 2019 in exchange for financial compensation.
The representatives of Octane Racing Group, promoters of the event, reacted to the news: Montreal and the Gilles Villeneuve circuit produce one of the most exciting Grand Prix of the season. In 2017, everyone will have even more good reasons to be there as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Canadian Formula 1 Grand Prix.
