Marcus Ericsson saw his future in Formula 1 as uncertain when Kimi Räikkönen and Antonio Giovinazzi were confirmed by Alfa Romeo Sauber for the next year. The Swede, who will only be a reserve driver for the Swiss team, was still keen to continue racing in 2019.

The Scandinavian is thus turning to America and more specifically to IndyCar, where he will be the driver for the Schmidt/Peterson Motorsports team alongside James Hinchcliffe. The 28-year-old driver will be driving car No. 7, with No. 6 remaining available for Robert Wickens if he is able to return after his horrific crash at Pocono.

Ericsson is delighted with this future adventure: “It’s a great honor to be one of the drivers chosen by Schmidt/Peterson Motorsports and IndyCar for the 2019 season,” he comments before continuing, “It’s the perfect step for my career after spending 5 years in F1.”

Sam Schmidt, the team owner, seems equally pleased with this recruitment: « Marcus has extensive experience at the highest level of motorsport and he will be able to contribute to our development program that started this year. We are confident in his willingness to learn and his work ethic, even though he will have new things to discover in IndyCar. He and James will form a competitive team aiming for victories. »
