The rumor kept persisting but it’s official today: Vietnam will host the premier category of motor racing and will become the third Southeast Asian state to host a Formula 1 Grand Prix, after Malaysia and Singapore.

It is in a municipal announcement that the capital of Vietnam announced it will host a Formula 1 race starting in April 2020 to replace the Malaysian Grand Prix.

Even though no circuit has been revealed, everything suggests that it will be an urban circuit and that it will be unveiled next week during a gala.

This project is expected to have significant economic impacts and will be largely sponsored by the private sector, according to senior government official Mai Tien Dung. Indeed, an event such as a Formula 1 Grand Prix is an excellent showcase for an emerging country like Vietnam.

The final step for this validation on the 2020 calendar is confirmation by the FIA and the F1 commercial rights holders.
