Earlier in the week, the Hanoi municipality announced in a statement the organization of a Formula 1 Grand Prix in its streets.

Today, Liberty Media, the holder of the commercial rights to the sport, confirmed this information through Chase Carey: “We are delighted to announce that Hanoi will host a Formula 1 Grand Prix. Since our involvement in this sport in 2017, we have talked about developing new destinations to broaden the appeal of Formula 1, and the Vietnam Grand Prix is an achievement of this ambition. We are thrilled to be here in Hanoi, one of the most exciting cities in the world right now, with such a rich history and an incredible future. It is the perfect formula for hosting a Grand Prix, and I hope it will become a real highlight of the F1 calendar.”

An enthusiasm shared by the city’s mayor, Nguyen Duc Chung: “We are proud to host the Vietnam Grand Prix of Formula 1 and to present the city of Hanoi to the world with its special combination of ancient and modern beauty, starting from 2020. This is a new demonstration of Vietnam’s ability to be one of the fastest-growing economies in the world, to organize global events, and to attract tourism to the country. It offers an opportunity for foreign investments in Vietnam and, above all, brings the exciting Formula 1 races to the Vietnamese people.”

Below is the planned circuit layout in the streets of Hanoi:

This layout incorporates some of the mythical turns from the calendar to form a 22-turn track spanning 5.565 km.

The first two turns are identical to those of the German circuit at Nürburgring, while the sequence of curves 12, 13, 14, and 15 is a copy-paste of the ascent of Mirabeau in Monaco. The rest of the Vietnamese track, specifically turns 16 to 19, resembles the famous S-curves of the Suzuka circuit.

The track will also feature three straight lines of 675 meters, 800 meters, and 1.5 km, where the single-seaters can reach a speed of 335 km/h.

The Vietnam Grand Prix is expected to be held at the beginning of the season, around April, probably around the time of the Chinese Grand Prix.
