Baku extends until 2023
Theater of numerous thrilling races, Baku has managed to secure its place on the F1 calendar. The discipline will therefore visit Azerbaijan until 2023, following the signing of a new agreement.
Welcomed with skepticism when its addition to the calendar was announced, it must be acknowledged that Baku has not disappointed during its first three editions, two of which were under the official name of Azerbaijan Grand Prix, with the first race held on its streets being called the European Grand Prix.
His first contract with F1 included a renewal starting in 2020. However, both parties decided not to wait any longer to secure the continuation of their association, as explained by Azad Rahimov, the Minister of Sports: « This new agreement will enable us to maximize our commercial revenue through more activities for fans and a new approach to sponsorship to involve local and regional businesses within the global F1 platform. With these exciting opportunities in mind, we never questioned extending our contract. We are thrilled to remain in this sport for at least five more seasons. »
With its mix of urban circuit and very fast straights, Baku has positioned itself as a unique event within the calendar. Over the past two seasons, it is thus the only Grand Prix whose podium was not monopolized by Mercedes, Ferrari, and Red Bull. In 2018, it was here that the break between Daniel Ricciardo and Red Bull was likely finalized during the collision between the Australian driver and his teammate Max Verstappen.
