Michael Masi is appointed Race Director by the FIA
The sudden death of Charlie Whiting forces the FIA to find a new Race Director for the inaugural round of the 2019 Formula 1 season. The governing body has therefore chosen Michael Masi, Whiting's deputy, to take on these duties.

Faced with the necessity of finding a new Race Director following the sudden death of Charlie Whiting, the FIA has decided to entrust this significant responsibility to one of the British Deputy Directors, Michael Masi.
He will therefore be responsible for the three main tasks that were assigned to Charlie Whiting, namely: starting the Formula 1 race, managing the dialogue with the teams regarding technical and sporting regulations, and ensuring compliance with safety procedures on and off the track. It is also the Race Director who decides on the deployment of the Safety Car, whether virtual or not, and the interruption of the race under a red flag.
For the moment, the FIA has still not announced the name of the person who should be the Deputy Race Director at the Australian Grand Prix. However, it seems that Michael Masi, with sufficient experience for the role, will continue this function throughout the season.
