For an as-yet-unknown reason, Pierre Gasly hadn’t adjusted well to his new ride. A complicated acclimatization that, according to some observers, could be linked to his two violent crashes during winter testing, which might have made him tense behind the wheel. But the Norman got back in the saddle and was finally able to exploit the potential of the RB15 in Baku.

Author of the fastest lap in Q1, his disqualification from the qualifying session due to carrying excess fuel in FP2 cost Gasly a good result on the grid. Undeterred, the Frenchman made a remarkable comeback from the pit lane, slicing through the pack and quickly finding himself in 6th place. He even showed a better pace than Charles Leclerc for part of the race!

The main party was keen to express his gain in confidence obtained in Baku with his Red Bull: « This weekend was much better than the first three races. I felt better with the car and was able to drive more like I wanted. In qualifying, I managed to show some good performances with a good lap in Q1. In the race, starting from the pit lane, we knew it would be difficult to fight at the front but we had a fast enough car to come back and score good points. »

The one who had been walking on eggshells so far seems to be doing much better, but a major challenge now awaits him. He must begin to challenge his garage neighbor, Max Verstappen, who has been very fast but, more importantly, very consistent at the start of the season. It’s not an easy task, but Gasly should have the car to achieve it. Indeed, the RB15 is a very good single-seater and could probably often fight with the Ferraris and maybe even Mercedes.

Currently 4th in the standings with 51 points, the Dutch driver is only one point behind Sebastian Vettel. It’s up to the Rouennais, tied for sixth with 13 points, to separate himself from the midfield drivers and significantly increase his pace to join the leading drivers.
