Starting 10th following Daniel Ricciardo’s penalty, Lando Norris had a very poor start! Demoted to 16th, the young Brit began a long recovery, without getting close to the points. Eyeing Lance Stroll for several laps, the F2 vice champion then decided to attempt a bold overtake on the Racing Point driver in the first corner.

On the outside path, too far from the pink single-seater in the second corner, Norris still tried to take the lead, but the Canadian driver held his ground by closing the door, leading the duo into the gravel. A racing incident that brought out the safety car for 6 laps, allowing time to clear the two wrecks, that of the McLaren and the Racing Point.

On the responsibility, Lando Norris clearly believes afterwards that the fault lies with Lance Stroll: « I don’t know if he saw me! I was on the outside at turn 1 and then found myself on the inside at turn 2. He didn’t leave me any room. I had positioned the car well on the inside. He took the turn as if I wasn’t there! It ended our race. I wasn’t in the points, so it doesn’t cost me as much as it could have, but it’s disappointing!

The other protagonist of this clash sees things differently and does not share his opponent’s opinion. The accused Lance Stroll on the stand: « I had to take my turn, so I steered and there was nothing else to do. I braked inside and dove into the first corner, then I had to take the next turn and unfortunately, there simply wasn’t enough room for both cars. »

Heard after the race by the stewards, note that the two drivers were not penalized for this incident, classified as a simple “racing incident”.
