He was expected, and this time he did not disappoint! First at the end of FP1 on Friday afternoon, Pierre Gasly’s weekend is indeed performing well overall, following his fifth place at the end of Q3. So, of course, the Frenchman has not yet beaten Max Verstappen, but his performance is quite honorable, three tenths behind the Dutchman, within half a second of the poleman, Valtteri Bottas. “I think we have worked well since the beginning of the weekend: I had pace yesterday and today,” reacted the Frenchman in the journalist zone, after his session.

Visibly satisfied with his changes, now having the same setup as Verstappen, Gasly is pleased to be heading in the right direction. Very clear-eyed about his fifth place, unable to dominate Mercedes and Ferrari, the French driver is nonetheless a happy man this Saturday evening. We knew they would increase their engine power in qualifying, which makes things more difficult for us. But as a team, we can be satisfied with this third and fifth place.

For the British Grand Prix, Pierre Gasly will start on medium tires, like the four drivers ahead of him. He will still need to hold off Sebastian Vettel, who will start just behind him on the grid. Starting on mediums is not going to be easy in terms of strategy, says the driver marked with the number 10. We’ll have to think between one or two stops, so we’ll see what we do. The ambition for Gasly will be to finish the job and at least match his best career performance: his fourth place at the 2018 Bahrain Grand Prix with Toro Rosso!
