Miami is getting closer

Liberty Media wants to believe: the possibility of a race in Miami seems to be getting closer. But administrative hurdles still need to be overcome. This new race would join the Austin Grand Prix as American events in the championship.

This time, we’re getting closer, but caution is still advised: F1 seems to be heading to Miami after several years of discussions, with a first edition starting in 2021. This is, in any case, the meaning of the statement made by Sean Bratches and Tom Garfinkel, the CEO of the Miami Dolphins American football team: « We are thrilled to announce that Formula 1 and the Hard Rock Stadium have reached an agreement in principle to host the first Miami Formula 1 Grand Prix at the Hard Rock Stadium. »

But as always, the devil is in the details. Indeed, it was probably not difficult to reach this agreement since the land around the stadium also belongs to Stephen Ross, the promoter of the event. Like in the “great” era of races in the parking lot of Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas, the circuit would primarily use the parking areas around the stadium.

Despite the prevailing triumphalism, there remains a significant obstacle: the event must still obtain final approval from the Miami-Dade commission. It is precisely this same commission that opposed the holding of a Grand Prix last year, which wanted to use the prestigious Bayfront Park setting.

We can thus note that Tom Garfinkel did not hesitate to retweet messages urging local officials to approve this new project, a sign that the outcome is far from decided.

While awaiting a possible green light for a second American race after Austin, F1 will continue its promotional tour across the Atlantic by organizing a new demonstration. This time, it will take place on the prestigious Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles.
