The legislative battle continues in Miami: Mayor Carlos Gimenez has decided to use his veto power, which allows him to bypass the city council's opposition to holding a Grand Prix near the Dolphins' stadium.

The potential arrival of F1 in Miami has indeed generated a lot of ink, both in the newspapers and within the city’s administration. While it might have been thought that the commission’s vote to ban the closure of public roads for a car race could have dashed the hopes of F1 and its local promoter, the saga took a new turn with Mayor Carlos Gimenez’s decision to use his veto power to oppose the commission’s decision.

A fervent supporter of bringing F1 to his city, the mayor justified his decision as follows: « Even though I remain sensitive to the concerns expressed by the residents of Miami-Gardens, I believe it is still too early to permanently block an event of the magnitude of Formula 1. Therefore, I am vetoing this law to restart the discussions on a neutral basis to give all parties time to find a solution that benefits the community while allowing Formula 1 to come to Miami-Dade County. »

A new countdown is therefore activated, as F1 and its partners from the Miami Dolphins now have two weeks to respond in writing to all the concerns raised by the opponents of the project. One of the central points of their concerns is the noise generated by the single-seaters and the inconvenience they may cause. On this matter, F1 can highlight the significant progress brought by the arrival of hybrid technology since 2014.

By May 2021, the scheduled date for Formula 1’s first visit to Miami, we can therefore expect that there will still be numerous exchanges and that it won’t be a smooth straight road…
