Mugello wants to host Formula 1 to replace the Chinese Grand Prix
The Mugello circuit is positioning itself to host a Formula 1 race in April to replace the Chinese Grand Prix, which has been postponed due to the coronavirus outbreak.

A few days after the announcement of Imola to host Formula 1 in replacement of the Chinese Grand Prix, it is the turn of another Italian circuit to position itself for organizing an F1 Grand Prix.
The Italian Mugello circuit, owned by Ferrari, has hosted a round of the MotoGP World Championship every year since 1982, but no major car competitions. Moreover, the circuit has never hosted Formula 1 races. The mayor of the city, Federico Ignesti, admits: « Organizing a Grand Prix at Mugello would be an excellent opportunity to be on the international stage. »
Can the circuit host a Formula 1 Grand Prix?
Regulation-wise, the answer is yes. The Mugello circuit has a Grade 1 rating which allows it to host a Formula 1 race. The circuit meets all the FIA criteria in terms of safety, facilities, and hospitality to organize such an event.
Nevertheless, the president of the Automobile Club of Italy, Angelo Sticchi Damiani, explains that in practice, the issue is more complex: « Imola and Mugello have expressed legitimate aspirations [to host a Formula 1 Grand Prix]. It seems difficult to me that a Formula 1 race could be organized by April on tracks that have not hosted one recently, but the ACI will do everything in its power to make it happen if the conditions are met. »
Will Formula 1 choose one of the 2 Italian circuits to replace the Chinese Grand Prix?
Nothing is less certain! Indeed, Italy is currently the most affected country in Europe by the Coronavirus epidemic. At least 229 cases have been confirmed and 11 cities are now in quarantine, according to the Italian daily La Repubblica.
The governing bodies of Formula 1 and the FIA will closely monitor the evolution of the virus before taking appropriate measures.
