The first Grand Prix of the season takes place in Melbourne. As every year since 2011, you'll have to get up early.

Critically missing Formula 1 after a three-month break, motorsport fans have been trembling for a few weeks due to the coronavirus. But the 2020 season will indeed start this weekend in Melbourne, Australia. And with spectators.

The Australian Grand Prix is a classic in the discipline. Integrated into the world championship in 1985 in Adelaide, it has been held in Melbourne since 1996. At 5.303 kilometers long, Melbourne is not a permanent circuit. Vehicles drive on the asphalt all year round, making the track sometimes unpredictable. The circuit is known for making overtaking difficult. Nevertheless, there are memories of spectacular battles, like that of Michael Schumacher (Ferrari) and Juan Pablo Montoya (Williams BMW) in 2002, or epic races like in 2010 under the rain, won by Jenson Button.

The lap record in the race was set in 2004 by the same Michael Schumacher in a Ferrari, at 1:24.125. The Albert Park circuit has been opening the Formula 1 season continuously since 2011. Only? Yes, because in 2010, it was Bahrain that inaugurated the season.

Departure 6:10 a.m.

As every year, only those who go to bed very late and wake up early will be able to follow the full weekend in 2020. The first free practice sessions start at 2 AM on Friday on Canal + décalé, followed by a second session at 5:50 AM. The next day, the third free practice session will start at 3:45 AM and the qualifying session at 6:45 AM. The race will start on Sunday at 6:10 AM on Canal + for 58 laps.

In 2019, Mercedes began the season with a one-two finish. Valtteri Bottas won comfortably, ahead of Lewis Hamilton. The Grand Prix was marked by the resurgence of Valtteri Bottas after a disappointing 2018 season. Ferrari also issued their first team orders in favor of Sebastian Vettel against Charles Leclerc.
