Official: The 2021 regulations postponed to 2022
The FIA, Formula 1, and all 10 teams on the grid have unanimously decided to postpone the new technical regulations initially planned for 2021, to 2022.

A conference call was held this Thursday between representatives of the different teams, in the presence of Jean Todt, FIA president, Chase Carey, CEO of Formula 1, and Ross Brawn, the sporting director, regarding the current situation of the championship and the best way to manage this COVID-19 pandemic.
The financial aspect quickly came up during this discussion. Indeed, the main concern of the teams is the high cost of implementing this new technical regulation. The 2020 championship may not take place in its entirety due to the numerous postponements of Grand Prix events. The income of each team in 2020 will therefore be less significant than in previous years. This pandemic will plunge the entire world into a financial crisis, and the teams did not want to take any risks in the face of this unstable financial situation.
« It was agreed that teams will use their 2020 chassis for 2021, with the potential freezing of other components to be discussed in due course » explains the FIA in a statement. It is highly likely that elements such as the gearbox will be frozen to prevent any advantage.
Nevertheless, despite this postponement of the regulation to 2022, the implementation of the financial regulation on cost reduction will be carried out as planned in 2021.
All these changes will have to be ratified at the next meeting of the World Motor Sport Council.
