Official: Daniel Ricciardo leaves Renault and will be a McLaren driver in 2021
Daniel Ricciardo will drive for McLaren starting next season. The Australian signed a multi-year contract this Thursday with the British team. He will team up with Lando Norris, whose contract has been extended.

The domino effect triggered by Vettel’s departure from Ferrari at the end of /f1/actualite/24010-transferts-qui-pour-succeder-a-vettel-chez-ferrari-en-2021-.html is just beginning: Daniel Ricciardo signs with McLaren! The English team officially announced this Thursday on its website the arrival of the Australian driver, starting from the 2021 season. The contract covers “several years” according to the team’s statement.
Renault driver since the start of the 2019 season, Daniel Ricciardo was free of any contract at the end of this year. He will team up with Lando Norris. McLaren also announced this Thursday the extension of the young British driver’s contract, who will compete for the third consecutive season in Woking, after his arrival at the beginning of 2019.
Renault caught off guard?
These two official announcements mark the departure of Carlos Sainz from McLaren to Ferrari at the end of the season.
The transfer of the Spaniard to Ferrari was also confirmed this Thursday morning.
At Renault, the task is now to find a replacement for Daniel Ricciardo. Paradoxically, the Australian had chosen Renault over McLaren in the middle of summer 2018, after deciding to leave Red Bull. But before the start of the season, the trend of progress currently favors McLaren, fourth in the last constructors’ championship, and set to be equipped with the Mercedes engine next year.
Collateral victim of this “silly season,” Renault is losing its lead driver. Having joined with the idea of bringing the French team back to the top of F1, Daniel Ricciardo will likely leave without having achieved the goal, with a simple 4th place at Monza in 2019 as his best provisional result.
If Cyril Abiteboul stated this Thursday morning in a communiqué that Renault’s ambitions in F1 remain “unchanged” despite this departure, the team principal also declared that “in the very unique situation we are going through, mutual trust, solidarity, and commitment are more than ever essential values for a constructor team.”
Simple reminder of values or subliminal message addressed to Daniel Ricciardo? The Australian reminds us that there is still “a chapter to finish” with Renault, if the season finally takes off next July.
Continued. Cyril Abiteboul: “I am confident that the /f1/actualite/24010-transferts-qui-pour-succeder-a-vettel-chez-ferrari-en-2021-.html season will allow us to accomplish even more together. Our ambitions and the strategy of Renault DP World F1 Team remain unchanged.” (2/2)
