New modifications in sight for the Mercedes engine?
Although the power of the Mercedes package is well-established, the team continues to carry out continuous developments. After the DAS, discovered during winter testing, the dense clouds being emitted from both cars 77 and 44 suggest changes to the Mercedes power unit.
This certainly didn’t escape the fans’ attention in front of their screens during this closed-door weekend. The Mercedes cars of Bottas and Hamilton experienced the emission of dense smoke at the same turn as they exited the first corner of the Hungaroring track.
Given the uniqueness of this layout with sections requiring different settings, some indications suggest that Mercedes might be optimizing its engine oil combustion process. As a reminder, the FIA implemented a more restrictive standardization of the use of this technique after the controversies during the 2017 season. Engine oil is intended solely for lubrication and not for combustion.
Before the qualifying session for the 2020 Hungarian GP, Mercedes is ideally positioned after the unequivocal results of the free practice 3, it remains to be seen whether it will be a resurgent Bottas or the reliable Hamilton who will clinch the pole position.
