The environmental movement Extinction Rebellion attempted an action at the Silverstone circuit this Sunday by deploying a banner during the formation lap of the British Grand Prix.

The banner was unfurled as the cars began their formation lap.

The four Extinction Rebellion activists were escorted off the circuit and then arrested by the Northamptonshire police, the county where the Silverstone circuit is located, according to a statement from the circuit.

« During the race, Northamptonshire Police were informed that four people had been apprehended by the Silverstone Circuit security within the circuit perimeter. Officers are working closely with Silverstone Circuit and are conducting a thorough investigation. Four people have been arrested and are currently in custody. »

This is the first time since 2013 and the Belgian Grand Prix (where Greenpeace had attached a giant banner above the grandstands on the main straight as well as banners on the podium to protest against Shell’s drilling in the Arctic) that an environmental banner has appeared on a Formula 1 circuit, moreover, during the race.
