The current Formula 2 driver with UNI Virtuosi, Callum Ilott announced this Monday that he will not be part of the starting grid for the next Formula 1 season.

Indeed, the Briton’s chances have diminished one after the other with the official announcement of the extension of the Räikkönen/Giovinazzi duo at Alfa Romeo, even though he was strongly expected to replace the Italian.

If officially there are still the two Haas seats, where Ferrari will place at least one of its drivers, the tendency towards a Mazepin/Schumacher duo has been an open secret for a long time.

« It’s time for me to announce that I won’t be driving in Formula 1 in 2021, he stated on his social media. « Obviously, I have known this for several weeks already. I am disappointed, but I will work even harder to try to get a seat for 2022 ».

Ilott does not underperform, however. In his second season in the F1 feeder series, the UNI Virtuosi driver is Mick Schumacher’s main competitor for the title.

Currently 2nd in the championship with 191 points, the Englishman has secured 3 victories and 5 pole positions this season and is only 14 points behind his colleague from the Ferrari Driver Academy before the last two races of the season this weekend in Sakhir.

If he were to win the title, it would be the second consecutive year that the Formula 2 champion did not advance to the top category, following Nyck de Vries last year, who moved to Formula E with Mercedes.

In any case, Ilott also stated earlier in the season that he knew where his career was headed and was determined to fight until the end to win the F2 title this season.
