The youth takes power at the GPDA! The Grand Prix Drivers’ Association appointed driver George Russell as its new co-director on Tuesday.

Aged just 23 (which he celebrated in February), the British hopeful succeeds Romain Grosjean, who left F1 for IndyCar after his contract was not renewed with Haas at the end of 2020.

Author of 38 Grand Prix since 2019, Russell finds himself in an important role, in the company of Sebastian Vettel, who remains the other co-director of the GPDA. Alongside the four-time world champion, the Williams driver will have to represent the interest of his fellow drivers to the F1 authorities.

A nomination seen as an honor and a privilege, according to the person concerned.

« I appreciate the support of my fellow drivers and acknowledging this responsibility » added Russell in a statement published on his team’s social media.

Always a role at GPDA for Grosjean

But Romain Grosjean won’t be far away. The Frenchman will remain at the GPDA this season as an honorary advisor. One of his main tasks will be to continue the work on safety, highlighted after the terrible accident he himself suffered last November at the Bahrain Grand Prix.

Based in Monaco, the Formula 1 drivers’ association is still chaired by former driver Alexander Wurz. Aged 47, the Austrian has made 69 starts in Grand Prix races between 1997 and 2007.
