Monaco Grand Prix – Hamilton and Mercedes lose the lead

Lewis Hamilton gives up his position as the leader in the driver championship standings. A 7th place finish in Monaco also costs Mercedes the lead in the constructors' championship!

Lewis Hamilton, struggling from start to finish in Monaco! Not completely comfortable in qualifying with last-minute adjustments on his W12, the British driver finished the Monaco Grand Prix in the same position as he had started: 7th place. Hamilton had started well from 7th place this Sunday despite the premature abandonment of Charles Leclerc.

The seven-time world champion spent his race behind Pierre Gasly’s AlphaTauri. Hamilton nevertheless tried the undercut on the 29th lap: without success, the British driver remained behind the French driver. Worse, Sebastian Vettel passed him: disgusted on the radio, the leader of Mercedes ends his current streak of 12 consecutive podiums, started last fall at Mugello during the Tuscan Grand Prix.

« It’s one of those bad days. As a team, we underperformed all weekend.

The pit stop cost us three places. There’s not much to do,” Hamilton reacted on Canal+ microphone.

Interrogated about losing the lead in the drivers’ championship, Hamilton showed determination on Sky Sports F1: « there is still a long way to go. » Not wrong, there are still 18 races left for this 2021 season!

Struggling in Monaco, driver #44 is already thinking about the next race, set on the streets of Baku: « we have to work and see how to minimize the loss. » Hamilton now has a total of 101 points… 105 for Verstappen after his first win in the Principality!
