While the Dutch Grand Prix was supposed to make its return to the calendar last year after 35 years of absence, the event had to be canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic. On September 5th, the single-seaters are expected to make their comeback on the Zandvoort circuit.

Since the Spanish Grand Prix, the public has gradually returned to the stands. The circuits of Barcelona and then Monaco had the chance to receive 1,000 and 7,500 spectators respectively.

Over time, the audience is becoming increasingly larger. For the return of the Dutch Grand Prix, the organizers hope to welcome nearly 100,000 people daily.

Last week, Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte announced that pandemic-related restrictions would be eased, starting with the end of the lockdown on June 5. The Minister of Health also admitted that he hoped social distancing measures and mask-wearing would be abandoned by September 1.

The Sports Director of the Dutch Grand Prix, Jan Lammers, is optimistic about the arrival of spectators at the Zandvoort circuit. He naturally wishes for the attendance of these 100,000 spectators, provided that social distancing measures are abandoned.

Now everyone knows how to behave with the virus around. Then there are people who have already had the coronavirus and those who have already been vaccinated. If we put all these things together, we already have a certain number of spectators who, in any case, are not at risk of being infected by the virus by someone else. We currently do not have a clear idea of the magnitude of this number, but it looks good and it’s nice,” he said in the columns of the Dutch edition of motorsport.com.

« It looks good… » Jan Lammers

Jan Lammers also stated that the decision regarding the holding of the race should be made by July. « I think logic and common sense will make this decision for us. We need two months to get everything in order from a logistical point of view. This is more or less our deadline to be able to set up all the temporary stands and things like that. »
