As Mercedes decided to bring their upgrades to the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Honda preferred to wait until Paul Ricard to introduce its new engine. According to information from Auto Motor und Sport, the new Honda V6 is expected to have better reliability, as well as a few extra horsepower.

This season, engine manufacturers can’t really increase the performance of their power unit, but they can still improve the reliability, which indirectly provides a few extra horses.

The AlphaTauri drivers, particularly Pierre Gasly, would certainly have preferred to install these new engines last weekend on their cars. After the race, the Frenchman revealed that he had suffered an engine issue, costing him nearly half a second per lap, preventing him from fighting with Vettel for the 2nd place.

This new engine could allow Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez to counter Lewis Hamilton’s attacks on the Paul Ricard circuit. Indeed, if the silver arrows struggled on urban circuits, the Dutchman expects stronger Mercedes on the normal tracks, starting with the French Grand Prix. Honda’s evolution would then arrive at the best possible moment.
