We had parted ways on Friday night with a score of 1-1, Mercedes against Red Bull.

On Saturday the sky is overcast, the air is heavy, and the temperatures are high. And Max Verstappen played a blinder.

A free session 3 as a warning

The Dutch didn’t even leave any crumbs to their opponents. Second is Valtteri Bottas, but seven tenths behind… A gap in these times where we’re used to seeing them being separated by hundredths! The message is clear, Red Bull has found the perfect set up, their number 1 driver is in great shape.

Behind the hierarchy is becoming more and more apparent. We see Ferrari fighting with Alpine and McLaren. For the moment, Carlos Sainz has the advantage. It is worth noting that Alfa Romeo is falling back and causing concern for the second session of the day.

The confirmation in qualifications

Verstappen announced it, he wants to redeem himself from the Baku incident. At the end of Q3, he confirms it and takes pole position. Christian Horner is obviously delighted and says:

“If we beat Mercedes here, we can beat them anywhere”

With so much enthusiasm, the Austrian team is clearly confident and will fight until the end of the championship to go for the two crowns! Lewis Hamilton fought until the end, he came back from far away and will accompany him on the front row on Sunday.

Bottas once again let go at the most crucial moment. Nevertheless, he secures the minimum with the third place just ahead of Sergio Perez. With rain forecasted for Sunday, the race is likely to be exciting. After the “errors” in Baku from both sides, no one should make any mistakes.

Huge disappointment at Alfa Romeo, the Schumacher surprise.

After a Friday that hinted at good results for the Swiss team, Räikkönen took some time to find the pace and got caught in Mick Schumacher’s accident. While he would improve to make it to Q2, the Finnish driver remains stuck once again in Q1. Antonio Giovinazzi was more incisive, but he still lacks a little something to reach Q3.

Mick Schumacher achieved an excellent time that allowed him to pass the first stage of qualifications. A first for him, and a joy rediscovered at Haas, finally! But a short-lived joy. Wanting to secure this position, a little too aggressive on his last lap, the German spins out and damages his car. He will watch the second round from the stands. His good performance bodes well for a good race if he manages to keep his car on the track.

Ambition among the French people

Pierre Gasly managed a very good Q3 and managed to move up to third position. He will be our best hope on Sunday. Esteban Ocon had been setting good lap times with Alpine until now. And even if he fails to reach Q3, the French team will be able to fight for points with Alonso in 9th place.
