While they were battling for 12th place, Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Räikkönen collided a few corners from the end of the Grand Prix. On the outside of turn 5, the Alfa Romeo driver hit the back of his former Ferrari teammate’s Aston Martin. The move ended in the gravel, forcing the German to retire. On his part, the Finn was found guilty of the accident and received a 20-second penalty.

I think there was a misunderstanding. I do not know what happened, I was inside and I thought I was in front. But I don’t know, I have to look. I have to talk to Kimi but I think there was a misunderstanding. […] I imagine he just didn’t see me in front of him. I had come out of turn 4 well and I was pulling away from Kimi, to the right, as we approached turn 5. I don’t think there was any intention on his part. », says Sebastian Vettel, who had to retire after this collision.

Also questioned about the incident, the Finn was very brief and stated that the final result would not have been influenced without this incident: « We got caught up again. It’s not ideal but in the end, it didn’t really change anything because we were out of the points,” admits Kimi Räikkönen.

With this accident and Lance Stroll’s 13th place, Aston Martin leaves Austria without a single point, a first since the Spanish Grand Prix in May.
