Pierre Gasly expected a better first part of the season at the wheel of his AlphaTauri. Yet, the Frenchman already has 48 points overall and even secured a podium in Baku (3rd) behind Sebastian Vettel and Sergio Perez. However, his team is struggling in the constructors’ standings. The fault lies in inconsistency from both drivers. Tsunoda, his teammate, has only 16 points. Gasly is expecting new opportunities for the rest of the season, similar to the past two years.

We witness a very tight battle at the top of the championship. There were opportunities in Baku, and we were there to seize them with the podium. There will be even more opportunities. So we must focus.

Gasly frustrated with his result in Hungary

The French driver left Budapest feeling unsatisfied. He thought he could achieve a better result considering his good qualifying session (5th). Gasly was forced to go wide at the first corner to avoid accidents caused by Valtteri Bottas and Lance Stroll. He dropped to eleventh place after the red flag.

« Looking at the podium, it’s disappointing. There was more to do if we had been a little lucky at the beginning. We didn’t have it, some more than others. After the start, they ran a very good race to keep the lead throughout the race. You have to be there when there are opportunities. »

The 25-year-old driver finished in fifth place thanks to Vettel’s disqualification. Furthermore, he earned an additional point by setting the fastest lap of the race. A rather satisfying result that gives hope for the rest of the season.

« We must keep the positive points. I am quite disappointed, but going from last place to fifth with the fastest lap is a good result.

Gasly took the opportunity to talk about the collision caused by Bottas at the first corner. He sees the penalty imposed on the Finn in a positive light:

« Everyone makes mistakes. I make mistakes, Lewis makes mistakes, but we all get paid to race. It’s our job. And when you make a mistake that involves three, four, or five cars, you have to be punished. »

Taking a step back, the Norman driver believes he has outperformed during this weekend, both in qualifying and in the race. Given Pierre Gasly’s performances in his car, it is possible to see him back on the podium this season if race events allow it.

Let’s find out, maybe he will be able to garner a new success? We hope so!
