Fernando Alonso: “The volcano is still there”
Alonso always thirsts for competition. The double champion still doesn't like to lose, whether it's in F1 or in another sport.

The volcano still sleeps within him. After two seasons away from F1 to compete in the Dakar Rally, Le Mans, and IndyCar, Fernando Alonso has joined Alpine, formerly Renault, the team with which he won two championships. A return to his roots rather well. The Spaniard regularly scores points and even achieved his best position of the season in Hungary (4th). However, Alonso has admitted that he still can’t stand losing while remaining aware of his abilities and those of his car.
« I asked myself the question, but I think not. I still can’t support it. Right now, I am not able to finish second or win. »
He admits, however, that if he were part of a team like Mercedes or Red Bull, it would be more difficult for him to control his anger.
« If I were with Mercedes or Red Bull and the other winner was on the other team, I would be like a volcano. But if you’re not in that position, you have different and realistic goals in mind for each weekend.
After his well-deserved fourth place in Hungary, while helping his teammate Esteban Ocon win his first victory in Formula 1, the Spanish driver specified his realistic goals.
« It may be to finish eighth or to reach Q3. Whenever I am not in Formula 1 and I do another activity, the volcano is always there, even if it means playing tennis or ping-pong. That doesn’t change. »
At the age of 40, Alonso does not plan to stop there. He should continue in 2022 alongside Ocon, claiming to enjoy himself since his return to F1. As long as he is having fun and competitive, he should not stop Formula 1 according to him.
