After the official announcement of George Russell’s departure to Mercedes, Williams quickly announced the arrival of Alex Albon alongside Nicholas Latifi for 2022. The current Red Bull reserve driver was competing against Nyck de Vries, the Formula E world champion.

Jost Capito, the boss of Williams, maintains a good relationship with Toto Wolff. Last week, the latter had declared that Albon should be released from his contract to find a new team. He even specified that he would not block the driver from joining De Vries. Following the announcement, Capito stated that experience made the difference in his choice.

« When we have to balance youth and experience, Alex has an advantage over Nyck. But that doesn’t mean Nyck would have been the worst in the seat next year. I think Toto, in the end, he understands and we understand that we are not a B team and we are not a satellite team. We have to make decisions that suit us. »

Nyck de Vries could, however, join F1. The future of Antonio Giovinazzi remains undecided. A spot at Alfa Romeo could therefore become available. Interviewed by Motorsport.com after Albon’s announcement, Capito believed it was important to be clear with everyone before starting a new Grand Prix week.

« When we reached the conclusion that it was the right thing to do, it was pointless to dwell on the choice. It’s much better for everyone involved if it’s clear, especially before going racing abroad. You are even less at home and even more difficult to communicate, so we are happy to have been able to resolve this before starting the season abroad.
