Everyone remembers the terrible accident suffered by Romain Grosjean almost a year ago. The French driver had suffered serious burns to his hands, despite wearing gloves.

In a security work process, the FIA authorized non-approved equipment dedicated to improvement works. When it comes to gloves, it will be necessary to reconcile driving comfort and effective protection against possible, although rare, fires.

The FIA explains in a statement: « These glove prototypes are designed to offer more protection time against high temperatures compared to the gloves currently in use. These new gloves will withstand high temperatures for a longer period and will allow the skin to avoid excessive heat for a longer period of time. »

During the first two free practice sessions, several drivers wore them: Lewis Hamilton and Carlos Sainz equipped with Puma gloves, Daniel Ricciardo in Sparco, Sebastian Vettel in Alpinestars, and George Russell with the OMP brand.

The FIA has been working since the beginning of 2021 particularly in the field of exposure to heat from fires. While the introduction date of these gloves is still unknown, it is established that other equipment should undergo safety improvements.
