Fastest driver in Free Practice 3 after a difficult Friday, Pierre Gasly confirmed this good form in qualifying by placing his AlphaTauri in 5th position.

The start probably didn’t go as he hoped. Caught between Sergio Perez and Fernando Alonso, the Frenchman pushed the Alpine wide and sent it spinning. A regrettable incident that the FIA will penalize with a 5-second penalty during his pit stop on lap 39.

With his penalty, the AlphaTauri driver had to display the best possible pace in order to stay ahead of McLaren’s Lando Norris during the second half of the race and even closed in on Lewis Hamilton in the final 10 laps.

« It was hot, I found myself between Fernando Alonso and Sergio Perez and I tried to avoid the collision but it was impossible. We served our penalty in the pits and finally we finished 6th just 10 seconds from the podium so I think we can be very satisfied with this result.

If the podium was probably out of reach today for the Faenza team, without the early race accident maybe Gasly could have finished the race a little higher.

9th in the driver championship, these points from 6th place reinforce his position in the standings.
