Mexico Grand Prix – Key Figures

Absent from last year's calendar due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Mexico is making its big comeback this weekend for the 18th round of the Formula 1 World Championship. Here are some key numbers to remember.

71: The number of laps to be completed in this Mexican Grand Prix.

4,304: The exact length of the Hermanos Rodriguez circuit. It is worth noting that despite some redevelopment work, it is the same layout as during the first Mexican Grand Prix in 1963.

1.15’024: This is the time achieved in 2019 by Charles Leclerc to secure pole position. It is the fastest lap ever recorded on this track.

2: As the number of winners in a Mexican Grand Prix on the grid: these are simply the two title contenders, Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen. Both have won twice on this track in 2016 and 2019 for the Briton, in 2017 and 2018 for the Dutchman.

Two is also the number of titles won by Lewis Hamilton on this circuit. In 2017 and 2018, the Mercedes driver, despite each time producing a laborious race, managed to clinch the victory.

4: If there are only two different winners on the 2021 grid, there are, however, four drivers who have already clinched a pole position. Lewis Hamilton (2016), Sebastian Vettel (2017), Daniel Ricciardo (2018), and Charles Leclerc (2019) as mentioned earlier. Absent from this list, Max Verstappen will therefore be seeking his first pole position this Saturday in Mexico.

21: This weekend, Mexico is hosting a Formula 1 Grand Prix for the 21st time in its history. The first Grand Prix took place in 1963 (although a non-championship race had already been held the previous year) without interruption until 1970.

F1 then returned in 1986 for 7 editions until 1992. It was only in 2015 that Mexico made its big comeback to the calendar for the great pleasure of local fans and spectators.

17: The number of turns on the Hermanos Rodriguez circuit.

1: Being the only Mexican on the grid, Sergio Perez will logically be the only national representative at this Grand Prix. There were more of them in the past, especially in 2015 for the return of the Grand Prix where his compatriot Esteban Gutierrez was still racing for the Haas team.

7: Accomplished driver and true star in his country, having already won two Formula 1 Grand Prix, Mexico has never managed to support its star driver. Indeed, in 5 participations, Pérez has never achieved better than 7th place, which was at the wheel of the Force India in 2018.

Now at the helm of a faster Red Bull, there is no doubt that the public’s favorite will want to stand out this weekend by stepping onto the podium for the first time on home soil.
