Engines 2026: candidates for the ECU called

Four years before the change in engine formula in F1, the FIA has decided to launch a call for tender. It will help select a single supplier for an electronic component of the next V6 Turbo (ECU).

Formula 1 has undergone its first transformation this year, both in terms of aerodynamics and aesthetics, if ever there was one.

The other upcoming revolution is scheduled for 2026 and has sparked Volkswagen’s interest. An example of this is the standardization of certain engine components.

The new generation V6 will still be hybrid, will use 100% synthetic fuels and will have increased electrical power.

That is why the FIA is opening the door to a single supplier of ECU, which will be a standardized component in the future power units.

The candidates will have until March 25th to introduce themselves. They will have to wait until mid-April to present their project to the FIA authorities.

The selected project will then have to provide samples on two deadlines: July 1st and October 1st, 2024. If, on these two dates, the project proves satisfactory, it will be frozen until January 14th, 2024. The supply must be guaranteed with three elements per team by July 1st, 2024.

The current supplier is none other than a collaboration between Microsoft and McLaren. Candidates will need solid arguments to dethrone the current holder of the electronic calculator, installed since 2008.
