Barcelona Testing: Ferrari is the most productive team on track

The winter tests in Barcelona are now over and the teams have completed more or less laps.

The team that completed the fewest laps is Haas. Indeed, the American team encountered multiple mechanical problems, especially with oil leaks, which first affected Mick Schumacher’s car on the first day and then Nikita Mazepin’s on the third day. They were only able to complete 160 laps, with almost no running today.

Alfa Romeo also did not complete many laps. On the first day, the Italo-Swiss team only managed to cover 32 laps due to numerous issues with the car. The following two days were slightly better, although Zhou had two track excursions, resulting in a total of 175 laps.

Alpine had a very good start to their winter testing with a total of 252 laps on the first two days, notably performing long runs on the tires to work on race pace and reliability. Unfortunately, Fernando Alonso’s engine problem at the beginning of the last day disrupted Alpine’s running, and they were only able to complete 12 laps.

Aston Martin assesses the three-day testing period as satisfactory, with Vettel and Stroll taking turns driving in the morning and afternoon. However, a late morning oil leak issue in Sebastian Vettel’s car on the third day forced Aston Martin to prematurely halt their session.

The remaining six teams have a positive record from their testing, with at least 300 laps covered over the three days, despite a slight lack of running for Red Bull and AlphaTauri. The latter encountered a gearbox issue with Perez during the second session, and Gasly had a harmless off-track moment, but nothing serious for both drivers.

What can be gathered from these tests is the prominence of four teams: Ferrari, McLaren, Mercedes, and Red Bull. The latter seem to be the potential favorites of this 2022 season, taking into account the number of laps and their performance on the track.

On the drivers’ side, Zhou, who is making his Formula 1 debut this season, has been the most active at Alfa Romeo, unlike Albon who completed fewer laps than Latifi even though he didn’t race in Formula 1 last season.
