As the 2022 season approaches rapidly, the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix 2021 continues to generate a lot of talk. In a documentary broadcasted by Sky Sports, Toto Wolff didn’t hesitate to accuse Red Bull and specifically Jonathan Wheatley, the sporting director of the Austrian team, of influencing the decisions of the then race director, Michael Masi.

« Jonathan Wheatley did his job. He turned Michael Masi around, not just in Abu Dhabi but also before. And Max probably owes him a lot,” Wolff said.

On Masi, the Austrian boss did not mince his words either: His decisions were bad and I am sure he regrets them. The FIA should have realized earlier that there was a problem. There was a problem in the process. There was a problem with personalities, adding that he had not spoken to the Australian and did not wish to do so. Masi has since been replaced as the head of race direction.

Even though he is still disgusted by the loss of the drivers’ title in 2021, Wolff feels sorry for Verstappen: « I feel sorry for Max. He deserves the world championship but all we talk about is Abu Dhabi. »
