Piastri becomes a reserve driver for McLaren
The young driver from the Alpine academy will now take on a role within McLaren.

In order to provide its young driver Oscar Piastri with more opportunities to make a mark in top-level motor racing, Alpine will loan him to McLaren as a reserve driver.
This announcement comes right after Daniel Ricciardo’s inability to participate in the winter testing in Bahrain, as he has tested positive for Covid19.
If the former Red Bull driver were to miss the first Grand Prix of the season in Bahrain next week, McLaren could therefore field Piastri in his place.
It is even more important for the young Australian to show himself on the paddock in order not to be forgotten by the F1 circus. As the reigning F2 champion, Piastri couldn’t find any seats available in the top category of motorsport. Therefore, it is crucial to seize all opportunities to make an impact and possibly secure a seat in 2023.
However, the F1 elevator is temporarily blocked for Piastri. Fernando Alonso and Esteban Ocon are here to stay at Alpine, as well as the driver pairings at Haas or Alfa Romeo.
