Steiner: “We are going to make the most of the dream!”

After Kevin Magnussen's fifth place finish, Haas finally breathes a sigh of relief and puts an end to two seasons stuck in the depths of the grid. The boss of the American team, Günther Steiner, wants to take advantage of the excellent form regained by his team.

It’s finally the end of a long tunnel for Haas. A fifth place and ten points for the American team seemed utopian just a few weeks ago. However, Haas seems to have overcome their bad luck by scoring points for the first time since the Eifel Grand Prix 2020. That’s a long drought of 28 consecutive Grand Prix without even glimpsing the top 10. Haas celebrated this fifth place from the Danish comeback as a victory, and the euphoria still hasn’t subsided in the garage.

« I don’t want to understand it, I want to live the dream!” exclaimed Günther Steiner when asked how he explained Kevin Magnussen’s superb performance. « Kevin knew he had a good car, we saw it in qualifying, but then you have to perform in the race. The longest stint we had done was 18 laps (in practice, editor’s note), so completing one of 57 laps was an accomplishment in itself. We didn’t make any mistakes. Everything was well prepared.

“We are back now.”

Temporarily third in the constructors’ standings, Haas can aim for an interesting position in a midfield whose hierarchy is still difficult to define. For Günther Steiner, the season is still long, and it’s important not to get too ahead of ourselves.

« I don’t think the ranking will stay like this for long, but it doesn’t matter, we’re going to enjoy the dream! These past two years, we had to stay on the sidelines but now we’re back. It’s special because everyone had lost faith for a while. In 2018, we were fifth and everything was going well, then in 2019 with the bad car, people completely lost confidence. They were saying the team was for sale, that the team this and that. But we’re still here, and we’re back now, assured a revengeful Günther Steiner.

Haas had made the choice not to develop its 2021 car in order to focus on the 2022 regulatory revolution. A risky decision that had condemned the team to a difficult year, but which is already proving to be fruitful.
