The Formula 1 boss, Stefano Domenicali, spoke out about the Netflix series “Drive to Survive”. The streaming platform’s show has achieved great ratings and has managed to get a lot of non-fans interested in F1. However, since its launch in 2018, the series has also caused quite a stir in the paddock.

« There is no doubt that the Netflix project has been a real success for Formula 1. To ignite the interest of a new audience, the tone used sometimes dramatized the story. It’s an opportunity, but it also needs to be understood. We discussed this in Bahrain during a meeting with the teams, explained Stefano Domenicali.

Some drivers have expressed their hostility towards the series, notably Max Verstappen, who refused to participate in the last season, reproaching Netflix for deviating too far from the reality of the season to create stories.

« A driver who refuses to participate because he believes he is not being represented realistically is not constructive, so a dialogue is necessary to understand how he can be included in a format that suits him. » Domenicali added.

Lando Norris had also been critical after the release of season 4 of “DTS,” accusing the series of taking phrases and images out of their context.

We are also going to talk to Netflix because it is not necessarily necessary for the story to deviate so much from reality, otherwise it no longer suits us, warned the boss of F1. This is a topic we will discuss with the drivers. We need to make sure that a project that has generated such exceptional appeal continues to please, but without distorting the reality and meaning of the sport we live every day.

Season 4 of Drive to Survive is available on Netflix since March 11th.
