Giancarlo Minardi elected president of the FIA single-seaters commission
Giancarlo Minardi has been elected president of the single-seater commission of the FIA. The 74-year-old Italian is known for having created his F1 team, Minardi, which competed between 1985 and 2005.
Giacarlo Minardi is the new president of the single-seater commission of the FIA. The 74-year-old Italian was elected by the members of the World Motor Sport Council during an electronic vote. He succeeds Bob Fernley, former deputy team principal of Force India. Fernley had been in office since December 2020 but was not invited to continue after Mohammed Ben Sulayem’s appointment as president of the FIA.
His successor will therefore be Giancarlo Minardi, founder of the Minardi team which competed between 1985 and 2005. The Italian is also the director of the Enzo e Dino Ferrari circuit in Imola, where Formula 1 will be heading next weekend for the fourth round of the season.
At 74 years old, Minardi is an experienced man in the world of motorsport. With his namesake team, he has long been the underdog of the paddock, failing to score any podium finishes in twenty years of existence. However, the Italian team has still launched some recognized Formula 1 drivers such as Mark Webber, Jarno Trulli, and a certain Fernando Alonso.
After being handed over to Paul Stoddart in 2001, the team will change hands again and this time its name in 2005 when Red Bull acquires it and rebrands it as Toro Rosso. Now known as AlphaTauri, “the little Scuderia” has not moved from the Faenza factory where Minardi had established it.
In this new role, Giancarlo Minardi will be responsible for overseeing the commission that controls the development of the single-seaters managed by the FIA (F1, F2, F3, and regional F3 and F4). This commission also oversees the technical development of the single-seaters and played an important role in the introduction of the halo in F1 in 2018. The president of the FIA, Mohammed Ben Sulayem, praised the election of the Italian on his Twitter account.
